So the stand works great. A few lessons learned: the bundles that come with a USB-C adapter are not good enough to connect to a newer display. You need a true Thunderbolt 3 dock. I learned the hard way and ended up having to buy a Thunderbolt 3 dock. Another thing I learned. When you first connect your thunderbolt 3 dock or USB-C adapter, you need to do it with the MacBook directly connected because you have to answer a prompt to allow the accessory to connect. You need to "allow" this new accessory first before you try to use the stand. One last tip: For me the best way to wake up the MacBook is to press control+command+Q. This seems to consistently work for me. Good luck!
